DAHLBERG, ELLA MAY (HODNETT)
Ella was the sixth child born to Royal W. and Mary (Johnson) Hodnett, on May 21, 1924 in Stillwater, MN. Ella lived on a 160 acre farm in May Township, Washington County until 1941.
She attended one-room School District 5, then Stillwater High School, graduating in 1941 as a member of the National Honor Society, Science Academy and thespian.
Ella’s secretary-bookkeeper career began at State Epileptic Hospital, Cambridge, MN in 1942. In St. Paul, her “Term of Employment” at Murphy’s Freight Lines dated March 20, 1944 lists “Rate of Pay: 68 cents an hour.” Other jobs Ella held in the Twin Cities are: Twin City Fruit, 12 years at Farmers Union Central Exchange, and 6 years at Ducks Unlimited. She also served 4 years as president of the St. Paul Audubon Society, and sang with the Civic Opera and Metzger Opera Workshop.
In 1966, Ella Married Clinton Timber Dahlberg, veteran of Guadalcanal WWII, and owner of Timber’s Resort in Howard Lake. Timber and Ella retired in 1978 to a 40 acre farm in Middleville Township to enjoy rural life, birds, animals, ponds and conservation. Ella served 12 years as the Middleville Township Clerk.
Timber passed away in 1996, a confirmed nature lover. Ella moved to Howard Lake, always supporting the Audubon Society, Sierra Club, Ducks unlimited, Legion Auxiliary, Disabled and Paralyzed Veterans and St. John’s Lutheran Church.
Timber, professional baseball player, had been in 48 states. Ella enjoyed two trips to Europe in 1958 and 2000.
Ella was preceded in death by parents; brother Ira and John, sisters Mary and Jane, and nephew Richard. She is survived by sister-in-law Violet of Stillwater; nephews Dean (Theresa) St. Paul; Daniel (Sue) Caldwell. Idaho; niece Gale Hanson (Raymond) Houlton, Wisconsin; and grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
Ella passed away on November 30, 2012, at Cokato, MN, age 88. Family and friends witnessed interment of cremains at Howard Lake Cemetery. Memorials preferred to HLWW School District 2678 Scholarship Fund, or, in lieu of flowers or memorials, dear friends, do something nice for a neighbor.
Internment will take place at the Howard Lake Cemetery on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 11:30 am. A Luncheon will follow internment from 12-1 pm at the Howard Lake Legion Club. Visition will be from 1-2 pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, with a memorial service to follow at the church.
