Shirley Jane Westphal was born on September 28, 1922 to William and Vanessa
(Clemens) Bowen at Glenwood, Minnesota. She grew up in Soudan and Glenwood,
Minnesota, graduating from Glenwood
High School in 1940.
After graduation she traveled to Howard
Lake to help her sister Lillian
Munson take care of her young family, while there she met Donald Wesphal. They were married on March 14, 1943.
In addition to being a full time housewife and mother,
Shirley has been a telephone operator, worked at Custers Super Value, Tonka
Toys, the Howard Lake Herald, and her favorite job at Howard Lake Schools.
Shirley was very active at St.
John’s Lutheran Church
of Howard Lake.
And a member of the Uffda Club.
Shirley passed away at Abbott Northwestern Hospital of
Minneapolis on January 10, 2013. She had reached the age of 90 years, 3months
and 22 days.
Suriviors include her children: Genell K. Reese of Howard
Lake, Bruce (Bobbi) Westphal of
Dayton, Nevada, and Jerrod (Ann) Westphal of Milaca, Minnesota. Grandchildren: Christopher Westphal of Grand
Forks, North Dakota, Jason Westphal of Grand Forks, Alexi (Parhelium) Wesphal
of Minot, North Dakota, Amanda (Robert) Chambers of Carson City Navada, John
Reese of Howard Lake, Ashley Westphal of St. Bonifacious, Minnesota nd Lindsey
Westphal of Milaca, Minnesota. 2
great-grandchildren Mackade and Isaac Chambers.
Sister Verna (Maurice) Kellander, sister-in-law Jean Bowen,
Brother-in-law Wilfred (Mary) Westphal and Roger (Butch) Westphal.
Shirley is preceded in death by: parents William and Vanessa
Bowen, husband Donald, and Brothers:
Truman Bowen, Willard (Ruth) Bowen, and Warren (Maxine) Bowen. Sisters: Lillian (Floyd) Munson, Beth Nemes,
Alice (Pat) Ketcham, Inez (Paul) Norlien, Elsie (Virgil) Cummins. Sister-in-law Eleanore (Gervase) Sexton and
Lois Westphal.
